D Giles` Shay geared locomotive The Kapiti Miniature Railway is a mixed-gauge (5 inch and 7 ¼ inch) club track, situated in the Marine Gardens at Raumati Beach, on the Kapiti Coast, about 50 Kilometers (30 miles) north of Wellington, in the North Island of New Zealand. The Railway hosts a collection of live steam, internal combustion and battery electric locomotives. The track is a double loop, and includes one station, two tunnels, two spirals and two viaducts, in a run of about ½ kilometer (600 yards). A planned extension will take the railway to a second station within sight of the beach and Kapiti Island. Trains are run between 1.00 pm and 4.00 pm on most Sundays of the year, weather permitting. Private runs for birthday parties, corporate events etc., can be booked; speak to any of the Private Bookings Officers named on the Contacts Page. As well as the Railway, the Marine Gardens contain a childrens' play area with a paddling pool (during Summer months) and picnic tables and beautiful trees, shrubs and flower beds. The beach is nearby with a superb view of Kapiti Island. Coffee and meals are available from the Waterfront Café, and ice cream from Three dairies in the Raumati Beach village centre across the road. A handy Fish & chip shop serves delicious meals. Car Parks are found in Garden Road, by the beach and in the village centre.
The Railway's Site Plan The Railway is run by The Kapiti Miniature Railway & Model Engineering Society Ltd. The station doubles as a clubhouse and is the centre of an active social life for members and their families.
